## Carrie Shares Her Professional Background Before Joining Exym

I am a registered health information technician (RHIT) and used that certification to work in the medical records department at a long-term acute care facility. I worked there from the time I graduated with my AAS until I took a break from the workforce to have kids.

## **How do you feel your previous experience helped shape your journey to Exym?**

My experience helped give me more insight to just how important HIPAA is.

## **What is something you would like to see change in the industry?**

I would like to see providers treat patients’ behavioral health needs the same as they treat their physical health needs. And, we need to release emergency funding to ensure that mental health facilities can meet the growing need for mental health care.

## **What do you feel is the top challenge mental health professionals face?**

A major issue is a lack of funding and burnout. There are fewer people in the workforce than people needing mental health help.

## **What is one tip you would give to someone starting a career in behavioral health? **

For those working in behavioral health, I suggest making an effort to connect with other new counselors. This will help you know that you aren’t alone in this adjustment period, and it will be freeing to share your experiences and worries with people who are likely feeling the same things.
